Tom Adams/Michael Cleveland - Live At The Ragged Edge *

Tom Adams/Michael Cleveland - Live At The Ragged Edge *

$19.39

Tom Adams and Michael Cleveland, two fans of honest fiddle and banjo music, casually pulled together a list of their favorite traditional bluegrass tunes, borrowed a PA from the nearby Presbyterian church, and set up in the back corner of their local coffee shop. The plan was to record the show onto mini-disc, and use that recording to listen back and critique their own performance -- maybe drop a third verse, or repeat a chorus that really cooked, then erase the disc and record the next show. Upon hearing the results of this loose live recording, Adams presented it to Rounder Select and the results are available as Live at the Ragged Edge. Adams and fiddle player Cleveland are both IMBA (International Bluegrass Music Association) award winners, and on these recordings it is easy to see why. The duo rip through classics like "Shady Grove," "Cripple Creek," "Sally Goodin," and "Little Maggie," as well as a handful of Adams originals. Sure, they forget a couple of the words and zip off on a few unusual tangents, but overall, the recording honestly projects the players` love of the songs and the warm reception they get from their audience. While it is doubtful that this one-shot recording will make it into the annals of bluegrass history, fans of earnest pickin` and fiddlin` will find themselves returning to this disc over and over again. ~ Zac Johnson Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. Samuel Adams

Samuel Adams

In this stirring biography, Samuel Adams joins the first tier of founding fathers, a rank he has long deserved. With eloquence equal to that of Thomas Jefferson and Tom Paine, and with a passionate love of God, Adams helped ignite the flame of liberty and made sure it glowed even during the Revolution's darkest hours. He was, as Jefferson later observed, "truly the man of the Revolution." In a role that many Americans have not fully appreciated until now, Adams played a pivotal role in the events leading up to the bloody confrontation with the British. Believing that God had willed a free American nation, he was among the first patriot leaders to call for independence from England. He was ever the man of action: He saw the opportunity to stir things up after the Boston Massacre and helped plan and instigate the Boston Tea Party, though he did not actually participate in it. A fiery newspaper editor, he railed ceaselessly against "taxation without representation." In a relentless blizzard of articles and speeches, Adams, a man of New England, argued the urgency of revolution. When the top British general in America, Thomas Gage, offered a general amnesty in June 1775 to all revolutionaries who would lay down their arms, he excepted only two men, John Hancock and Samuel Adams: These two were destined for the gallows. It was this pair, author Ira Stoll argues, whom the British were pursuing in their fateful march on Lexington and Concord. In the tradition of David McCullough's John Adams , Joseph Ellis's The Founding Brothers , and Walter Isaacson's Benjamin Franklin , Ira Stoll's Samuel Adams vividly re-creates a world of ideas and action, reminding us that none of these men of courage knew what we know today: that they would prevail and make history anew. The idea that especially inspired Adams was religious in nature: He believed that God had intervened on behalf of the United States and would do so as long asits citizen

Emmy Award-winning director Tom Hopper takes the helm for this epic, seven-part miniseries produced by Playtone's Tom Hanks and Gary Goetzman, and presenting American history as seen from the perspective of fiercely independent founding father John Adams (Paul Giamatti). Based on author David McCullough's Pulitzer Prize-winning biography, the film tells the tale of a leader whose remarkable vision helped to guide a burgeoning republic through an especially tumultuous period. Thanks to the tireless support of his loving wife Abigail (Laura Linney), and lifelong friendship with political rivalry Thomas Jefferson (Stephen Dillane), John Adams rose to prominence as the spokesman for the American independence movement before moving on to become America's first ambassador to Holland and England, the first American Vice President, the second American President, and the father of the sixth American President. As with McCullough's best-selling biography, the film draws on a comprehensive collection of letters, diaries, and family papers in order to create the most accurate representation of Adams' life and achievements ever captured on film. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

The set celebrates 25 years of Adams`s catchy anthems and power ballads, dating back to 1980`s jaunty, youthful "Remember." Adams, of course, hit a real stride with his mid-80s albums, and plenty of the tunes from those discs are here, including the hard-rocking "Cuts Like a Knife," the urgent "Run to You," and the charmingly nostalgic "Summer of `69." In addition to his later soundtrack hits, ANTHOLOGY also offers up the best moments from Adams`s `90s/`00s output (some recorded live), easily making this the finest Adams retrospective on the market. The big mystery of this 1998 collection is the lack of material from 1990`s Circle of One, by far her strongest and more musically varied set of songs. A mere three tunes are included here: "Get Here," the Soul II Soul-styled "Rhythm of Life," and the rousing "Circle of One." Her weaker second album, Evolution, however, is represented by no less than five tracks, and four songs from Moving On also appear. The Very Best of Oleta Adams also includes material that was never previously available on an Oleta Adams album. Tears for Fears` Seeds of Love hit "Woman in Chains" is here, and Adams` pitch-perfect vocal harmonies play off Roland Orzabal`s melodramatic bombast surprisingly well. Though a more subtle arrangement may have been more successful, her rendition of "Don`t Let the Sun Go Down on Me" (which appeared on the Elton John/Bernie Taupin covers album Two Rooms in 1991) is performed w

Patch Adams - Collector's Edition

Patch Adams - Collector's Edition

$5.36

Rated: PG13Synopsis: While Robin Williams has demonstrated an almost preternatural ability to sublimate his well-established comic persona when essaying dramatic roles, the thoroughly enjoyable Patch Adams is one of those rare movies that allows him to play a memorable character who's alternately silly and solemn. He's perfectly cast as real-life doctor Hunter "Patch" Adams, the sawbones with a smile. Patch believes heartily in the healing power of humor, which he dispenses regularly to patients over the objections of a staid, established medical establishment (personified by one of Patch's dour instructors, played by prolific, talented character actor Daniel London). Monica Potter registers strongly as a skeptical fellow student eventually won over by Patch's unusual approach to medicine. Director Tom Shadyac (Ace Ventura: Pet Detective) rates high marks for deftly combining slower, dramatically potent scenes with those relying on fast-paced improvisational comedy. Frequently sidesplitting, but also profoundly moving in spots, Patch Adams provides a dazzling showcase for one of the screen's most popular and innovative stars. The two-disc "Ultimate Edition" provides the feature in both wide-screen and full-frame configurations, along with commentary by Shadyac, deleted scenes, outtakes, a photo gallery, storyboard-to-scene comparisons, a making-of featurette, production notes, cast-crew biographies, behind-the-scenes footage, and a documentary, "The Medicinal Value of Laughter." The fact-based story of an unconventional physician who attempted to heal patients with laughter, based on his own book and mixing equal doses of scatological humor and pathos. Robin Williams stars as Hunter Adams, a troubled young man who commits himself to a mental institution in the late 1960s. His experiences there convince Adams to become a doctor, and he enrolls in medical school, where he is appalled at the cold, clinical professionalism that alienates patients from their caregivers. Determined to provide emotional and spiritual relief as well as medicine, Adams clowns around for his patients, getting to know them personally. Although his efforts seem to work wonders and the hospital nursing staff is grateful for the levity Adams provides, his methods alienate his uptight roommate Mitch (Philip Seymour Hoffman) as well as the staff and faculty of his school. Adams perseveres, however, even starting his own low-cost rural clinic called the Gesundheit Institute, and wooing a pretty fellow student, Carin (Monica Potter). Tragedy strikes, and Adams' career is put in jeopardy, forcing him to defend his style and philosophy before a board of jurists determined to bar him from practicing medicine. Patch Adams (1998) was produced by former M*A*S*H (1972-83) star Mike Farrell, who met the real-life Adams when the offbeat doctor served as an advisor to the actor's popular TV series. Revisiting this album more than a decade later still confirms this; if anything, hearing him less makes you like him more. The hit singles still sound consistently good - `Somebody`, `Summer Of `69` and `Run To You` - but although he has a clearly recognizable style and sound all the other tracks sound fresh. Adams never needs to top this record as there is enough grist on this to keep him playing live forever. Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. For personal use only. All rights reserved.

$55.99

While our new nation was suffering attacks from both within and without, John Adams had a vision of a nation of liberty and justice for all. He guided his peers -- General George Washington, Benjamin Franklin and Thomas Jefferson -- in setting the values and agenda for a glorious, free America. Adams and his wife Abigail refined these ambitious democratic ideals, and their partnership became one of the most moving love stories in American history.John Adams, the Pulitzer Prize-winning book from Author David McCullough, is now the critically acclaimed seven-part miniseries from HBO Films -- a sprawling, epic production from executive producers Tom Hanks and Gary Goetzman, two of the men who brought you the Emmy-award winning Band of Brothers.Starring Academy Award nominees Paul Giamatti (Cinderella Man) and Laura Linney (The Savages) as John and Abigail Adams, directed by Emmy winner Tom Hooper (Elizabeth I) and adapted by Kirk Ellis and Michelle Ashford from McCullough's book, John Adams is the incredible saga of a man who dreamed a nation and watched it come true.

It`s not hard to buy. His vocalizing has a sweet, soulful quality ala Robert Cray or at times Bobby Bland. And his electric six string takes definite cues from his idol, B.B. King, who employs Adams at his L.A. club and shows up on two of these tracks.Adams wrote 3/4 of these slick tunes, typically ranging from straight mid-tempo to downhearted blues about women. "Honda Betty" is as contemporary a theme as you`ll find, and there are some T-Bone Walker-like shuffles as on "Jumpin` The Gun" and the cookin` "Good, Good, Good." Some fine horn charts punctuate five cuts, back-up vocals on two, and B.B. cameos on "Get You Next to Me," and the signature slow "Long Haul." A personal "Rehabilitation Song" speaks of being in a halfway house and the abuse that preceded it, pleading for forgiveness. The final selection "Backup Man" could be a double entendre, expressing frustration about being a part time lover or a star in the shadows. Adams has many redeeming qualities on a restrained blues and contemporary pop level. Perhaps a live recording will reveal more from this gifted musician who perfectly reflects the carefree attitude of his adopted home. ~ Michael G. Nastos Copyright (C) Muze Inc. 2005. General Books publication date: 2009 Original publication date: 1918 Original Publisher: E.P. Dutton and Company Description: A finely significant novel written with deep understanding of the facts and with a spiritual insight that does not flag even for a moment as it throws light into the dark corners of human na-ture--Boston Evening Transcript (1918). A naturalist novel writ-ten in the tradition of Theodore Dreiser and Upton Sinclair, Salt has interesting and provocative things to say about the educa-tion of American upper-middle-class males and about the power of sex to overcome a man's deep distaste for a woman's personality. As a criticism of life the novel today seems simply the herald of a day when loud voices are less noted because all voices are loud. Today its vivid characterizations are its primary inter-est. Lester Adams, Griffith's alcoholic half-brother, whose days and nights are mired in an unchanging routine of newspapers and whiskey, manages to preserve a semblance of heart and an odd little spark of integrity. F. Scott Fitzgerald considered Les-ter, along with George Hurstwood and Tom Buchanan, the three best characters in contemporary American fiction. Griffith's paramour, Clarisse Rumsey, is cheap, lazy, and pre-tentious; she is dull and almost illiterate; she is absurdly affected, but she has two qualities that enchain her reluctant lover: her obvious passion for him and her skill at dancing. As Auchincloss points out in the Afterword, Today, her dancing would belove-making, but before 1914 a girl who tried to be respectable would endeavor to put the latter off at least until she had hooked her man. Griffith and Clarisse are married and Clarisse bears him a son then dies of a pulmonary embolism as Norris manipulates the plot to redeem Griffith and to denounce the American boarding school and university.
