Small Redesign, Big Impact - Iron Balusters for an Update or Whole New Design Direction in your Home

Perhaps you’ve been watching HGTV and have gotten the itch to start working on things in your home but aren’t exactly sure where to start. Well, not every redesign project needs to involve a huge structural remodel. Launching into a full home redesign is not always an option – but there are ways that you can change your home’s look and feel without taking on a project too big to imagine. Sometimes a combination of one smaller structural change and some cosmetic design elements can make a world of difference. An example of this would be to retrofit your staircase or balcony with new elements, such as iron balusters and then work out from there for a new design style.

In houses where the staircase or balustrade is open and visible, this can be one way that you can update and even completely change the look and feel of your home easily and affordably. Many people don’t realize that they can retrofit the balusters in their current staircase or balustrade, but in most cases you definitely can. Whether you have wooden or iron balusters currently, retrofitting with new iron balusters may give you all the change that you are looking for. You can even add a whole different style flavor with iron balusters – there are many possibilities available – gothic, contemporary, ornate scrollwork and they are just as lovely and detailed as custom work.

People don’t realize that by changing something along these lines that the impact can be quite dramatic. In fact, it’s often the type of change that goes overlooked. They are used to seeing their stairs as they always have been and short of a major remodel, in the location where they always will be – so they aren’t even considered when you’re looking for a project to tackle. But these are exactly the type of smaller structural elements, similar to changing countertops and cabinets in a kitchen that can make a big shift in your home -- but in most cases at a dramatically more affordable price than tackling your kitchen! And the impact is going to amaze you, especially if you take the look and feel in a different direction from your home’s current design style. For example, if your home has had a country look and feel with carved wooden balusters, imagine the impact that retrofitting with iron balusters with a gothic influence could have. If your current furniture can work with a dramatic style change like that, or if simple slipcovers will make it work, then you can even punch it up a bit more with some minor cosmetic elements like wall color, window coverings and various accessories, and your redesign project could far exceed your expectations for a much smaller budget than you had ever imagined. All just from focusing on something as obvious, but neglected, as your staircase and adding iron balusters as the main design element.

And if the outside of your home is where you are looking at making improvements, you can use iron balusters outside as well to bring a unique updated look to the front of your home and bring curb appeal to a new level.

It’s great that the popularity of all the home redesign shows and networks such as HGTV are bringing people’s pride in their homes to an all time high. People are jumping into do-it-yourself projects or are working along with their contractors to be more involved than they have in the past. There are so many little areas, such as staircases and iron balusters, where a little creativity and vision can go a long way and influence the rest of the home design. Take a look around your home today and see if there’s something you’d like to change. It may not be your staircase or iron balusters where you’ll jump in to the world of redesign, but it just may.

I have to press a dress for my daughters "living museum" project...can I use a flat iron for hair?

i cant find my regular iron and havent even used it since i ironed a girl scout vest and melted the berber carpet doing it.

(i'm not safe with hot dangerous utensils)

she has to have this dress by this afternoon. will it work?

I doubt that will work on an entire dress.... I use my flat iron for the cuff of my jeans from time to time....

Worst case, just toss it in the dryer with two dry bath towels and 1 damp wash cloth... works like a charm!

While he is best known for his stories of adventure in the outdoors, such as White Fang and The Call of the Wild, London also wrote a significant body of science fiction, including the caveman novel, Before Adam (1906), the post-holocaust novel, The Scarlet Plague (1912), and The Star Rover, a book about a convict under torture who can project his mind to far times and places, which profoundly influenced Robert E. Howard. The Iron Heel (1907) is a major work of dystopian fiction, the product of London's Socialism, about a fascist-capitalist tyranny in the United States in the 20th century and its struggle with the enslaved proletariat. As such it is an important ancestor to Zamyatin's We and Orwell's 1984.

Iron Maiden

Iron Maiden

$19.98

There may be no better place to hear how both punk and prog rock informed the New Wave of British Heavy Metal than Iron Maiden's self-titled debut. Often overlooked and overshadowed by the glorious Bruce Dickinson years, it's easy to forget that Iron Maiden was itself a game-changer when it appeared on the scene in 1980. That year also saw important albums from Motörhead, Saxon, and Angel Witch, but Iron Maiden vaulted its creators to the head of the NWOBHM pack, reaching the U.K. Top Five and establishing them as an outfit with the talent to build on Judas Priest's late-'70s innovations. On the one hand, Maiden was clearly drawing from elements of punk rock -- the raw D.I.Y. production, the revved-up velocities, and the vocals of rough-and-ready growler Paul Di'Anno, who looked and sounded not like a metal god, but rather a short-haired street tough. On the other hand, Maiden had all the creative ambition of a prog rock band. Compositionally, even their shortest and most straightforward songs featured abrupt changes in tempo and feel. Their musicianship was already light years beyond punk, with complicated instrumental passages between guitarists Dave Murray and Dennis Stratton and bassist Steve Harris. When Murray and Stratton harmonize their leads, they outdo even Priest's legendary tandem in terms of pure speed. The lyrics have similarly high-flying aspirations, spinning first-person stories and character sketches with a flair for the seedy and the grotesque. Add it all up, and Iron Maiden performs the neat trick of reconciling two genres seemingly antithetical to one another, using post-Priest heavy metal as the meeting ground. The seven-minute "Phantom of the Opera" is a landmark, the band's earliest progressive epic and still among its best; with its ambitious fusion of musical styles, its multi-sectioned construction, and the literary retelling of the lyrics, it seemed to encapsulate all the promise of both the band and the NWOBHM. Two of the simpler, punkier rockers, "Running Free" and "Sanctuary" (the latter left off the U.K. version but added to subsequent reissues), made the lower reaches of the British singles charts. The flasher tale "Prowler," one of the band's more enduring numbers, is in the same vein, but ups the instrumental complexity, while the title track still remains a concert staple. Elsewhere, the band offers the first of many instrumentals with "Transylvania," introduces the recurring title character of "Charlotte the Harlot," and reimagines Judas Priest's "Beyond the Realms of Death" with the "ballad" "Remember Tomorrow," which starts out soft but closes with a speed-freak guitar section. Perhaps the only hint of a misstep comes on the more restrained ballad "Strange World," the only song from this album that was never re-recorded in a live or alternate version by the Dickinson lineup. Nonetheless, the whole project explodes with energy and ideas, and while the band would certainly go on to refine much of what's here (
