From its beginning as a fruit and indigo nursery to the gloriously and immaculately manicured course we see today on television, these photos and accompanying text convey the true spirit and beauty of Augusta National. The Augusta National membership dispute dominated headlines and watercooler conversation for nearly a year, propelled by twenty-first-century hot-button issues and a pair of perfectly drawn foils in Hootie Johnson and Martha Burk. Bobby Jones, Augusta National, and the Masters Tournament

A great and lasting tribute. . . . a literary gem. -- Arnold PalmerEveryone who loves the game should read A Golf Story. -- Jack NicklausSoon after its original publication in 1986, A Golf Story was heralded as one of the classics of golf literature. It is a book that intertwines three immortal subjects--Bobby Jones, Augusta National, and The Masters Tournament--into one compelling narrative. These three stories are inextricably linked; together they form a fascinating backdrop to an April drama that is unique in the annals of golf and that, like Jones himself, transcends sports. Using firsthand experiences with Augusta National and The Masters Tournament that date back to 1948, Charles Price spent three years weaving together this historic story. And, in an unprecedented move, Augusta National opened its guarded archives for his research, thereby making this book the first authorized history of both the club and the tournament. The golden thread of the saga, however, lies in Bobby Jones--the real Bobby Jones--with whom Price shared a remarkably close friendship. His firsthand knowledge of Jones's life, both on and off the course, is what truly makes this book unique.

Success at Augusta National breeds legends, while failure can overshadow even the most brilliant of careers. But as Curt Sampson reveals in The Masters, a cold heart beats behind the warm antebellum faade of this famous Augusta course. And that heart belongs to the man who killed himself on the grounds two decades ago. Club and tournament founder Clifford Roberts, a New York stockbroker, still seems to run the place from his grave. An elusive and reclusive figure, Roberts pulled the strings that made the Masters the greatest golf tournament in the world. His story--including his relationship with presidents, power brokers, and every golf champion from Bobby Jones to Arnold Palmer to Jack Nicklaus--has never been told, until now. The Masters is an amazing slice of history, a look at how the new South coexists with the old South: the relationships between blacks and whites, between Southerners and Northerners, between rich and poor.[Curt Sampson's] fine new book, The Masters, is the only way we mortals are ever going to gain entree to the hallowed Augusta National Golf Club.
